Description

Originally published in 1988 as a single-volume hardback edition, Mind and Brain and The Consequences of Determinism consider the three principal issues of the philosophy of mind: the exact nature of the relation between mental and neural events; how both sorts of events come about; and their relation to actions. The answers that Honderich provides in Volume I constitute a new determinist philosophy of mind. He proceeds in Volume II to explore the consequences of that position, considering what the truth of determinism means for, among other things, our life-hopes, our attitudes towards others, and our view of moral responsibility.

Reviews

"The problem first of clarifying and then of answering the questions how far human thoughts and actions are subject to causality and whether this is consistent with their being free is one to which many different approaches have been made throughout the history of philosophy. I doubt if any of them has been the product of such intense research as Professor Honderich has devoted to the construction, the defence and the evaluation of his theory of determinism."--A.J. Ayer, London Review of Books

"I have no hesitancy in recommending A Theory of Determinism to anyone interested in the wide range of topics it considers."--Philosophical Review

"Honderich re-sets what had become cast-iron categories of debate, and provides a third, original solution to the problems of determinism's consequences...a major philosophical breakthrough."--The Literary Review
