Description
This text presents the latest information on mobile, recalcitrant compounds in gasoline and the newly emerging compounds being developed for use in gasoline and other vehicular fuels. The use of some of these compounds has resulted from environmental regulations specifying the addition of oxygenates to gasoline and papers in this volume consider the chemical, geochemical, hydrogeological, and atmospheric behavior of oxygenates. Methods for investigation, detection, and remediation, and the multidiscipliniary approaches needed to meet the challenges posed by these compounds are also discussed.Reviews
"The US Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it will use the Toxic Substances Control Act to reduce or eliminate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in gasoline by 2003. A study published in May 2001 estimated that MTBE releases may continue to contaminate groundwater in the US until at least 2010. This book discusses issues surrounding the presence of MTBE and other fuel oxygenates in the environment. Material is arranged in sections on occurrence in the environment, assessment of health risks and physical properties, oxidative chemistry and remediation technologies, and biological degradation processes. Specific topics include MTBE remediation, states' responses to MTBE legislation, and the use of fuel oxygenates in Europe."--SciTech Book News
